National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) celebrates the important role a nutritious school breakfast plays in helping students start their day ready to learn, grow, and succeed. Observed each year during the first full week of March, NSBW shines a spotlight on the School Breakfast Program and the dedicated school nutrition professionals who fuel students every morning.
We believe in starting the day off right-and that includes a nutritious breakfast for all students. By celebrating National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) every year, we’re encouraging all schools to recognize the importance of a healthy start to the day for fueling a child’s academic success.
Did you know children who eat breakfast are more likely to…
- Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
- Score higher on standardized tests
- Have better concentration and memory
- Be more alert and maintain a healthy weight
But when the school week gets busy, it’s easy for students to rush out the door in the morning without having a nutritious meal. That’s why school breakfast is such a great option! In fact, students who participate in school breakfast tend to have better attendance rates and fewer behavioral problems.
The School Breakfast Program provides 16 million nutritious breakfasts to hungry children across the country every day. These breakfasts tend to be more nutritious than the average breakfast a child gets from home or a convenient fast-food restaurant.

To our Lackland ISD maintenance workers: Your tireless efforts behind the scenes make a world of difference. From early mornings to late nights, you keep our facilities running smoothly and create an environment where learning can thrive. We are deeply grateful for your commitment and excellence.
Thank you for all that you do!

A firearm should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under the Penal Code, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
· Failed to secure the firearm; or
· Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to share an important reminder to help keep all students safe on our campuses.
Recently, we’ve noticed an increase in students using skateboards on school property outside of designated areas. While we understand skateboarding is a popular and enjoyable activity, it can also lead to accidents—especially when students are alone and not under adult supervision. Falls, collisions, and other injuries can occur quickly, even for experienced riders.
To ensure student safety, skateboarding is not permitted on school grounds. Security forces will be monitoring campus facilities to support this policy and help maintain a safe environment for everyone.
We kindly ask for your help by reminding your child of this rule and encouraging safe choices before and after school.
Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.
Respectfully,
Dr. Burnie Roper
Superintendent of Schools

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.
ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:
*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app
*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents
For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications
Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.
Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.
The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Madyson Newberry attended Lackland ISD for six years, graduating as president of the Class of 2018. Since then, she has received her associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. She is an LPC-A here in San Antonio and is working on her clinical hours to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.
How long did you go to Stacey?
I attended Stacey from 6th grade to 12th grade, so about 6 years.
What was your favorite subject?
My favorite subjects at Stacey were Theater, Psychology, and History.
What clubs were you in?
I was in numerous clubs at Stacey. I was involved in Theater/ Theater UIL, Film, and Student-to-Student. I also served as Class President, a Student Council member, and even a basketball manager at one point.
Where did you go to college?
After graduating from Stacey, I earned an Associate’s degree in Psychology from Northwest Vista in 2019, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UT Austin in 2022, and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. Mary’s University in 2025.
What do you do now?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I have completed my Master’s degree and am currently working toward completing my required clinical hours for full licensure. I specialize in trauma, human sexuality, and relationship and attachment concerns. I hold a certification in trauma treatment and have advanced training in attachment issues, particularly those related to narcissistic and antagonistic abuse.
Favorite memories at Stacey?
I have a few memories that stick out. Some of my favorite memories from Stacey were seeing theater productions come to life. I had to play Hades at one point and ride a tricycle while riding onto stage to the Arctic Monkeys, "Do I Wanna Know?" Another favorite memory was not being in the yearbook class, but helping my best friend, who was in the class, take photos for the end-of-year slideshow and our senior video for graduation. Some of my best memories from Stacey are also the small moments that felt fleeting at the time, like those lunches filled with uncontrollable laughter alongside my closest friends.
What do you like to do for fun?
For fun, I train in Muay Thai and boxing, and I love to dance (especially Two Step, Cumbia, Bachata, and Salsa). I also enjoy crocheting and trying to see every horror movie that comes out in theaters whenever I can.
What is your favorite candy bar?
My favorite candy bar has to be Twix.
Thank you for your participation Madyson Newberry!

Inspirational best selling American author and Illustrator Don Tate shared his skills and techniques with elementary students in the LISD auditorium! Kids loved hearing about his journey from childhood to award winning author! He even drew for the students showing how he created characters. After his two presentations he graciously signed books for any child who had one! Our Librarian, Mrs. Smith made this possible! Thank you!

Mrs. Palmerton and Mrs. Jackson had a Marvelous discovery when they realized they wore the same shirt for "The Power of Words" Day during Read Across America Week!

What a fun filled week in Kinder Land! Hands on learning, special guest reader... our counselor Mrs. Ramirez, & visiting the Fire Station. Thank you! We are grateful!

Read Across America is a celebration of books and reading! At Lackland, we did that very well this week! Several students turned in awesome Family Literacy Projects! Students worked with their parents to create a book character or an actual person from a biography. We are impressed with their creativity!
On Tuesday, Author/Illustrator Don Tate brought his own magic to Lackland Elementary! Our students have been talking about his visit all week. He inspired us, drew with students, and shared his story of becoming an author and an illustrator. What a gift! Each class received a signed copy of one of his books to enjoy in the days ahead.
Students learned about the Mars Rover Curiosity in the library and built rovers with Makerspace materials. On Friday, engineer Kelly Smith will present to all of our students about the Mars Rover showing videos of the rocket launch and landing. We also had some fun dressing up to show some spirit for Read Across America. Big fun! I hope each of you spends a little time reading a book over spring break...Happy reading!

Dear Gifted and Talented Families,
Spring is always a season of energy and momentum, and our GT classrooms are no exception. As the year continues, students are diving deeper into complex thinking, meaningful discussions, and creative challenges that stretch their ideas in exciting ways.
Academically, learners are engaging in higher-level questioning, problem-solving, and opportunities that encourage them to analyze, evaluate, and create. We are intentionally designing experiences that allow students to think beyond the obvious, make connections across subjects, and defend their ideas with confidence.
Equally important is our continued focus on social-emotional growth. Gifted learners often experience learning intensely, and we are supporting them in building resilience, managing big feelings, and strengthening collaboration skills. Encouraging healthy risk-taking and embracing productive struggle remain important parts of their development.
You can continue supporting your child’s growth at home by:
• Asking thoughtful “why” and “how” questions that spark deeper conversations.
• Celebrating effort and perseverance, not just outcomes.
• Encouraging independent projects connected to their interests.
• Helping them reflect on both successes and setbacks as opportunities to grow.
Gifted education is not just about moving ahead—it’s about growing deeper. Together, we can continue creating experiences that challenge, inspire, and empower our students to reach their full potential.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
With appreciation,
LISD Gifted & Talented Service
Vickie Johnson

Gifted learners often enjoy getting things “right.” Because of this, they may avoid tasks that feel difficult or unfamiliar. This month, focus on helping your child understand that challenge is not a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of growth.
Try saying:
“I love how you stuck with that.”
“What strategy could you try next?”
“What did you learn from that mistake?”
When students learn to embrace challenge, they build resilience, confidence, and deeper thinking skills. Growth happens when learning feels just a little uncomfortable.

Registration is now open for KLRN's Play and Learn program!
Play & Learn offers families (with young children) an opportunity to connect in a family-friendly, educational environment. At each session, participants receive children’s books, take-home activities, and materials to use in their homes.
Families meet once a week to participate in parallel play experiences, and explore PBS KIDS programs, apps and resources. Families also attend workshops that explore integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) at home, and learn about developmental milestones.
This year, we have three locations around town for families to attend:
Tuesdays starting March 24
City of San Antonio SE Service Center
1318 SE Loop 410 ACC Rd.
San Antonio, TX 78220
Thursdays starting March 26
Maverick Library, 8700 Mystic Park
Wednesdays starting April 15
Region 20, 1314 Hines
San Antonio, TX 78208
