Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Lackland Independent School District observes Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 12, 2026.
This day provides a meaningful opportunity for the Lackland ISD community—including students at Lackland Elementary School and Virginia Allred Stacey Junior-Senior High School—to reflect on the rich history, diverse cultures, and enduring contributions of Native Americans.
As a district proudly serving military-connected families on Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Lackland, celebrating this day aligns closely with our mission to value individuals and foster innovative, inclusive learning experiences.

Honoring History and Culture
Indigenous Peoples' Day focuses on shifting the historical narrative to honor the original inhabitants of North America. Nationally recognized via presidential proclamation since 2021, the day celebrates more than 600 Tribal Nations across the United States.
In San Antonio and the surrounding South Texas region, this history is deeply intertwined with various Indigenous groups, including the Coahuiltecan people, who played a foundational role in the area's early history and the establishment of its historic missions. Local installations, such as the Wickiup Encampment public artwork at nearby Pearsall Park (which overlooks JBSA-Lackland), stand as physical reminders of this historic presence and the Indigenous connection to the local landscape.

Integrating Indigenous History in Our Schools
While our students have the day off from classes, Indigenous history and perspectives are integrated throughout our curriculum year-round. From Texas history blocks to high school social studies at Stacey Jr./Sr. High, teachers use evidence-based resources to highlight Native achievements, governance, and resilience.
Parents looking to explore this day further with their children can access digital materials and reading lists through the JBSA Lackland Library kids' portal or the San Antonio Public Library Back to School guide.

Looking Ahead on the District Calendar
Following the long weekend, classes will resume on a regular schedule on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, which also marks the official start of the second grading period for the district.

Welcome to Boot Camp!

by: Brooke Voorhees, sophomore
Recently, on Wednesday, 10/07/2026, our school was visited by the United States Marines! The Marines reached out hoping to train with one of our sports teams, so when offered the chance to train our Athletics class they jumped at the opportunity. In the Athletics class, the students performed Physical Training (PT) with volunteers from the Marine Corps. The high schoolers were split into teams and did relays to test their strength and stamina. The teams were neck in neck resulting in a surprise plank challenge to act as a tiebreaker! This wasn’t just a chance for the kids to exercise; they worked as teammates and learned the true qualities of a leader. The Marines took this chance to recognize a special student they saw these qualities in, Niriel Rosado Rodriguez!

🩺 Thursday Skills in Ms. Favila’s Principles of Health Science Class! 🩺

Today, our students got hands-on with an exciting Peepod Lab! Students learned how a catheter works, why catheters may be used, and what different types of urine can tell healthcare professionals about a patient’s condition. Students filled their catheters with simulated urine samples representing normal urine, bloody urine, infected urine, and concentrated urine associated with dehydration. 💧🩸 Through this interactive and fun lab, students were able to connect their classroom knowledge to real-world patient care while developing their clinical observation skills. Learning by doing is what makes Thursday Skills Day so much fun! 🩺💉

A Blast from the Past!

past
Ms. Evelyn Oefinger and Ms. Emilie Rogers visited Mrs. Palmerton and the Lackland ISD Archives last Friday.  Their mother, Mrs. Drucilla Oefinger, taught 6th grade at Lackland Elementary from 1964 to 1978! She was known as Mrs. Oefinger until 1970 and as Mrs. Poplin from 1970 on.
Ms. Oefinger and Ms. Rogers kindly donated several class and faculty photos from their Mother's time as a teacher here! We are thrilled to be able to add these to our recorded history of Lackland ISD!

Ms. Oefinger and Ms. Rogers did not attend school at Lackland, but they did come to campus to help their mother decorate her classroom.
The sisters lived nearby and attended Jay High School. They were able to access Lackland AFB with their friends (some of whom had a parent who was active military at Lackland AFB), so the sisters were on Base and fondly remember time spent at the Bowling Alley and Roller-Skating Rink!

Their mother loved to cook and for two years coordinated the Educator's Edibles Cookbooks, full of recipes from the Lackland ISD Staff!  We look forward to sharing a copy with Chef Hassell and her Culinary Arts classes!

While Ms. Oefinger and Ms. Rogers were here they toured the LISD campus and visited with Dr. Hyde, Dr. Shelby, Mrs. Nancy Garcia, and Chef Hassell.  They commented that our campus is beautiful and our students and staff were kind and welcoming.

Thank you, Ms. Oefinger and Ms. Rogers!

Welcome Coach Ramirez!

by: Jarred Dunn, senior
coach
Please welcome Natasha Ramirez to Lackland ISD! Ms. Ramirez is coaching JH volleyball, varsity girls basketball and track in addition to teaching the JH PE classes.

Where are you from?
Bloomington, TX
What college did you go to?
St. Mary's University - Bachelors
Our Lady of the Lake University - Masters
What made you want to become a PE teacher?
I wanted to become a PE teacher because of my passion for sports and my belief that movement should be fun. When physical activity is fun, it makes staying healthy a natural part of life.
How long have you been teaching?
13 years
What other schools have you taught at?
Robert G. Cole MS/HS
What is your favorite activity to teach your students?
This is my first year doing PE so my answer may change by the end of the year but currently I enjoy teaching volleyball and softball skills.
What do you think is the most challenging part of teaching?
I think the most challenging part of teaching is all the behind the scenes work that teachers do.
Do you play any sports? What sport are you the best at?
In high school, I ran cross country and track. I also played volleyball, basketball, softball, and golf. The sport that I am the best at is softball.
What is your least favorite sport and why?
If I had to pick a least favorite sport it would be soccer. Only because I do not like that soccer games can end in ties. I want to see someone win the game.
If you weren't a teacher, what career do you think you would be in?
If I was not a teacher, I would have become a sports physical therapist.

Stacey Flashback: Meagan Fleming

by: Brooke Voorhees, sophomore
fb
Meagan Fleming (Fretz) graduated from Stacey in 2016. She currently works as the Global Social Media Manager for Rackspace.

1. When did you attend Stacey?
7th through 12th grade, 2010–2016.
2. What places have you lived? Where was your favorite?
Temple, Brownwood, San Angelo, San Antonio, Abilene, Rocksprings, Cibolo and Fort Worth. My favorite was Cibolo, outside of San Antonio.
3. Where did you go to college? What was your major?
I started at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, then transferred to Texas State University in San Marcos. I graduated with a degree in Digital Media Innovation & Mass Communication. I would highly recommend this major!! Yearbook was actually the reason I pursued communications and marketing.
4. Did you do any extracurriculars/sports at Stacey?
Track, tennis, basketball, volleyball, yearbook, Student Council, FCCLA, S2S, and more.
5. What was your favorite story from Stacey?
Gosh… just one?! That’s a hard choice. I’m going to give a top three, so apologies if that breaks the rules hehe. 1) Volleyball throughout the years with Coach Greeness, and going to State my senior year when we hadn’t gone for nine years. 2) Attending the annual Student Council conference with Mr. P (Poludniak). 3) Summer Yearbook camps with Mr. Keller & the team we had. Building out our vision for the book ahead was truly so fun as an editor.
6. Where do you work now? What is the best part of your job?
I work remotely as a Global Social Media Manager for Rackspace, which is headquartered in San Antonio. They offer great benefits, and I’ve had many opportunities to grow and learn beyond social media, which is what I was originally hired to do. I still lead our organic social presence, but have stepped in to support brand, creative projects, public relations and executive communications. That’s been awesome to learn!
7. What has happened in your life since you graduated?
I went to college in Abilene, took a year and a half off to work at a Christian outdoor adventure camp called Camp Eagle, where I met my future husband, went back to college in Abilene, then ultimately transferred to Texas State and moved to Cibolo. My then-boyfriend moved to the area, we got married in 2021 (Mr. Keller was there!), and we moved around until we bought a home. We enjoyed life there with our animals, Harley and Jasper, then decided to make the big move to Fort Worth in November of last year to be close to family on both sides. It’s the best, but we’re still settling in.
8. Do you have any advice for upcoming graduates?
I know all the adults say it (ew, I guess I’m one of them), but truly, having now been ten years out from graduation, time flies so fast, so enjoy every moment. Don’t rush it. Be present, get off your phone, make memories and connect with others. That’s what matters most in life.  Pursuing what the world calls “success” isn’t the path you have to choose. Find something you can enjoy. Not every job is going to be your dream role, but you spend a lot of your days working, so pursue something you can enjoy.
9. Are you still close with anyone from Stacey?
• Kianna Pine (maid of honor) serves as a labor & delivery nurse in the Navy.
• Aiyanna Casias (bridesmaid) is a domestic engineer (SAHM) in Germany with her Air Force husband and their daughter.
• Maria Albarella and I connect regularly, and we met in the last half of my senior year! It’s never too late to make friends.
10. What do you do in your free time?
My husband is my best friend, so we love being outdoors, being with our animals, playing disc golf, yard games and board games, working out, and serving and attending church.
11. What’s your go-to snack?
When I’m not eating clean, a bag of Funyuns always hits the spot.
12. Is there anything else you would like to share?
Yearbook was my favorite subject throughout school, and I didn’t know what to do with that info, but marketing and communications in the real world closely match a lot of that work. So if you enjoy it like I did, more than your normal subjects, know that there is a career path that mirrors it.
Thank you Meagan!

Library Scoop

Our students have enjoyed learning about the language, foods, traditions, and folktales of the Hispanic culture as we dove into our Hispanic Heritage Month exposure. Our early grade students made tacos from colored paper to connect to the book they heard, and our older students were delighted to learn about a legend in a folktale from Mexico.

The Literati Book Fair has wrapped up and will make another stop at Lackland in the spring. We had our raffle drawing for books and three lucky winners left with books, pencils, erasers, and a backpack. Happy reading!☺️

GIFTED AND TALENTED FAMILY NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 2026

An October Reset for GT Families

Helping busy minds find balance as the school year gains momentum
By October, the excitement of a new school year may begin to fade. Assignments become more challenging, schedules feel busier, and the next school break can seem far away. Gifted students may experience this part of the year especially intensely as they balance high expectations, perfectionism, busy minds, and the everyday demands of school.
Return to the Basics
•  Protect sleep. A consistent bedtime and time away from screens help busy minds and bodies recover from the school day.
•  Choose water and nourishing meals. Healthy habits support concentration, steady energy, and emotional regulation.
•  Make time to move and play. Outdoor activity and unstructured play provide an important mental break and help relieve stress.
•  Create space for conversation. Ask what felt exciting, difficult, or surprising - not only what grade your child earned.
•  Celebrate effort and growth. Notice perseverance, creative thinking, thoughtful questions, and lessons learned from mistakes.
•  Leave room for rest. Gifted children do not need to be challenged every moment. Quiet time and simply doing nothing can restore creativity and curiosity.
One Helpful Question
Try asking: “What is one thing you worked through today, even when it was difficult?”
October can feel long, but it also gives families an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and reset. Sometimes the best way to help a child move forward is to pause, breathe, and begin again.
