Lackland ISD is joining school districts across Texas and the nation to recognize National School Bus Safety Week. Held annually during the third full week of October, this year’s campaign centers on the theme "Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes," honoring the dedicated transportation staff who protect our students daily.
School buses remain the absolute safest way for students to travel to and from school. However, ensuring that every child arrives and returns home safely is a shared community responsibility.
Here is how our Lackland ISD community—including students, parents, and motorists—can work together to uphold the highest safety standards.
🛑 Crucial Rules for Motorists
According to data compiled by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), driver distractions and stop-arm violations put children at serious risk every day. Drivers must obey these life-saving laws:
-
Stop for the Red Flashing Lights: When a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop arm, drivers moving in both directions must come to a complete stop.
- Obey School Zone Speed Limits:
- Always slow down, stay alert, and eliminate distractions when driving through school zones and residential areas.
-
Watch for Yellow Lights: Flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop, rather than trying to speed past the bus.
Key Tips for Students and Parents
Safety begins before the bus even arrives. Parents are encouraged to review these simple behaviors with their children:
-
Arrive Early: Be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time to avoid rushing.
-
Practice the "Safe Zone" Distance: Stand at least 10 to 12 feet back from the curb while waiting for the bus. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the doors open.
-
Listen to the Driver: Once on board, students must remain seated while the bus is in motion and follow all instructions from their bus driver.
-
Drop Something? Leave It: If a student drops an item near or under the bus, they should never try to pick it up. They should immediately notify the bus driver, as the area directly around the bus is the most dangerous blind spot.
Thanking Our Everyday Heroes
National School Bus Safety Week is also the perfect opportunity to say thank you to the Lackland ISD Transportation Team. Our drivers, monitors, and mechanics navigate traffic and early mornings to keep our students safe.

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents
For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. Parent Square Notifications
Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.
Off: No notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant: You'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest: You'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.
The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

While many schools crowd into a familiar, sweaty gymnasium, Stacey High students were treated to the expansive, professional venue space at Arnold Hall. Known for hosting major base functions, concerts, and community celebrations, the center was completely reimagined by the student council. Moving past standard military utility, the hall was decorated with dazzling lights, creative backdrops, and functional visual anchors that set a truly celebratory tone. The heart of the evening beat on the dance floor, where a live DJ kept the energy high with a mix of current chart-toppers and classic throwback hits. From the moment the doors opened, the venue filled with high energy as students danced together, took selfies, and celebrated their shared connection.
No Homecoming dance is complete without its royal traditions. Mid-way through the evening, the music paused for the highly anticipated coronation ceremony. The crowd gathered around the main stage as the Homecoming Court was presented. Cheers erupted through Arnold Hall as this year's Homecoming King and Queen were crowned, recognized by their peers for their outstanding leadership, school pride, and character.
As the final song played and the lights slowly returned, it was clear that the evening achieved exactly what the organizers intended. For the students of Stacey High, Homecoming at Arnold Hall is more than just a dance—it is a rare opportunity for a community of military-connected teens to pause, let loose, and build lasting memories together. Thanks to the hard work of the staff, student volunteers, and base coordinators, this year's event will easily go down as a defining moment of the school year.

Music filled the air at the Stacey High School band fall concert, where student musicians and vocalists delivered a spectacular evening of performances to a packed house of proud families, classmates, and teachers.
The highly anticipated autumn showcase highlighted the diverse talents of both the choral and instrumental departments, leaving the large audience deeply impressed by the students' technical skill and emotional expression.
A Vocal Opening
The evening commenced with the Stacey High School choir, who set a warm and inviting tone for the night. Their performance moved seamlessly through a variety of genres and eras:
-
"America the Beautiful" – A stirring, patriotic rendition that filled the auditorium with powerful harmonies.
-
"My Favorite Things" – A delightful, nostalgic nod to The Sound of Music that brought smiles to the faces of teachers and parents alike.
-
"It's So Easy (To Fall in Love)" – A fun, upbeat vocal performance that added a touch of classic rock-and-roll energy to the program.
The Band Takes the Stage
Following the choir, the Stacey High School band took the stage under the spotlight, commanding the room with a sophisticated selection of instrumental pieces:
-
The Tempest – The band opened their set with this dramatic, driving piece, capturing the turbulent energy of a storm with precise percussion and powerful brass dynamics.
-
Cavatina – Shifting gears, this performance offered a moment of serene brilliance. The delicate, lyrical phrasing demonstrated the band’s impressive tonal control and maturity.
-
Contempo – To close out the night, the musicians delivered a vibrant, modern performance filled with complex rhythms that perfectly showcased their weeks of hard work and dedication.
A Community Celebration
The thunderous applause and standing ovation at the end of the night made it clear that the months of rehearsals had paid off. For the parents in attendance, it was a proud display of growth; for the teachers and classmates, it was a stellar showcase of school spirit and artistic talent.
With such a successful fall concert in the books, the Stacey High School music department has set a high bar for the rest of the school year. Congratulation band director Morgan Skaggs!

The Stacey Jr/Sr High School AFJROTC Top 6 Cadet Leadership recently had the privilege of hosting the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) and Top Cadet Leadership from Randolph Secondary School’s AFJROTC program. 🫡⭐
This joint meeting served as a valuable opportunity for both cadet corps to share best practices, exchange leadership strategies, and discuss ideas for co-curricular activities like drill teams, community service initiatives, and leadership development. 💡📚 Grounded in the shared Air Force core values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do, the gathering marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to strengthen ties and foster unity across Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) cadet corps.✨
Both programs look forward to building a fruitful partnership, working together on future leadership activities, and continuing our shared mission: developing citizens of character dedicated to serving our nation and community! 🚀🦅

Who knew brushing your teeth could be a healthcare skill?
Today, my Principles of Health Science students are putting their skills to the test during our Teeth Brushing Thursday Lab!
Students will explore proper brushing techniques, oral hygiene, and the importance of keeping teeth and gums healthy. In healthcare, oral health is about much more than a bright smile—it plays an important role in preventing infections, reducing the risk of gum disease, and supporting overall health.
Healthcare professionals must understand how to educate patients on proper oral care, recognize potential problems, and promote healthy habits.
Today’s lesson is a reminder that even the smallest daily habits can make a BIG difference in patient care.
Brush up on your skills, protect those smiles, and remember: healthy mouths help build healthier lives! 🦷💙🪥

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, TX — Student creativity and vital safety messaging came together at Lackland Elementary School during its recent Fire Safety Poster Contest. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade showcased their artistic talents to promote fire prevention and awareness.
The campus held a special award ceremony where the first, second, and third-place winners from each grade level were recognized. The proud student artists received individual trophies and certificates celebrating their colorful and informative masterpieces.
Following the campus celebration, the artwork moved to a larger stage. The winning posters were transported to JBSA Fire Station 1 on base. The station proudly displayed the students' work during its community open house, giving local families, military personnel, and first responders a chance to admire the safety messages through the eyes of Lackland’s youth.

The library is looking colorful with all of the creativity shared as the Storybook Pumpkins arrive! Thank you parents and families for supporting your child as they create a pumpkin that looks like a storybook character! Every participant receives a free book of their choice. We welcome student entries through Friday, October 30th. Next Thursday and Friday, students will vote for their favorite Storybook Pumpkin. We look forward to having some awesome winners that will receive a gift certificate to our next Book Fair. This promotes literacy, family time, and creativity for all! Big fun!
Our library lessons have been colorful, too. Students are chanting fall poems and researching wolves through a database. Helping busy minds find balance as the school year gains momentum
By October, the excitement of a new school year may begin to fade. Assignments become more challenging, schedules feel busier, and the next school break can seem far away. Gifted students may experience this part of the year especially intensely as they balance high expectations, perfectionism, busy minds, and the everyday demands of school.
Return to the Basics
• Protect sleep. A consistent bedtime and time away from screens help busy minds and bodies recover from the school day.
• Choose water and nourishing meals. Healthy habits support concentration, steady energy, and emotional regulation.
• Make time to move and play. Outdoor activity and unstructured play provide an important mental break and help relieve stress.
• Create space for conversation. Ask what felt exciting, difficult, or surprising - not only what grade your child earned.
• Celebrate effort and growth. Notice perseverance, creative thinking, thoughtful questions, and lessons learned from mistakes.
• Leave room for rest. Gifted children do not need to be challenged every moment. Quiet time and simply doing nothing can restore creativity and curiosity.
One Helpful Question
Try asking: “What is one thing you worked through today, even when it was difficult?”
October can feel long, but it also gives families an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and reset. Sometimes the best way to help a child move forward is to pause, breathe, and begin again.
